He was convicted guilty of Fisad-e-filarz, or “corruption on Earth,” for allegedly taking part in the murder of a Basij militiaman during rallies in Karaj celebrating the 40-day anniversary of Hadis Najafi’s dying.
Karami, who maintained his innocence, was convicted by the Iranian authorities using “shoddy evidence,” according to human rights organizations.
Thousands of protesters have been imprisoned as a result of the Mahsa Amini rallies, and hundreds have been charged with crimes such Moharebeh (“waging war against God” or “corruption on Earth”), which are punishable by death in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Prior to Karami and Hosseini, Mohsen Shekari and Majidreza Rahnavard were assassinated by Iranian authorities. They were found guilty of the same crimes as Moharebeh due to other alleged charges connected to the Mahsa Amini demonstrations.

Mohammad Mehdi Karami was hung on January 7, 2023, according to the state-affiliated Fars News Agency.
Four anti-regime protesters from the Mahsa Amini demonstrations have now been put to death as a result of these executions.
While Karami awaited his death, inmates allegedly beat him and threatened to rape him.
In a video posted to social media a few weeks before Karami was executed, his parents urged the Iranian government not to put their son to death.
Karami’s parents also alleged that when he was being held captive, Iranian authorities mistreated him.
Karami’s parents reported that he was in “good spirits” despite being abused in prison, but that the ordeal had left him “physically damaged.”
The day before Karami was executed, Mehdi Beik, the political editor of Etemad, was taken into custody by Iranian authorities.
One of the fathers of the condemned Iranian protesters was in conversation with Beik.
Mohammad Hossein Aghasi, a lawyer for Karami, alleged on Twitter that Karami was not allowed one last chance to speak with his family before being executed.
Aghasi claims that three days prior to his passing, Karami began a dry food fast in retaliation for the Iranian government’s refusal to allow Aghasi to represent him.

Iranian Police detained 13 adult males, including Mohammad Mehdi Karami and Seyyed Mohammad Hosseini, as well as three juvenile boys in connection with the slaying of Ajamian.
The accusations made against Karami and Hosseini in Setayeshi’s report were not supported by any evidence.
Karami claimed that while being detained, security guards struck him “such hard he lost consciousness,” leading detention officials to believe Karami had passed away.
He added that “severe physical and emotional assault by government agents” had been inflicted upon him.
Then, “they placed his body near a courtroom,” but just before they left, “they realized he was still alive.”
Seyyed Mohammad Hosseini and his lawyer also claimed that the government tortured him in order to force a confession.
His confession was illegal under the law, according to Hosseini’s lawyer, because it was taken “under torture.”
Hosseini recited his confession while “full of tears” and claimed that the torture consisted of the authorities electrically shocking various parts of his body as well as other techniques.
Similarly, Amnesty International claimed that the prosecution used “shoddy evidence” and forced confessions to condemn Karami and Hosseini, adding that Karami’s confession was also gained through torture.
