Terry McDermott, the sole representative of the United States who won a gold medal in the 1964 Winter Olympics, passed away on May 20 at the age of 82.

U.S. Speedskating announced his death in a statement, but no further information was provided.

Mr. McDermott was not widely recognized in the speedskating community until his remarkable victory in the 500-meter race at the Innsbruck Games, where he surprised the two-time defending Olympic champion, Yevgeny Grishin of the Soviet Union, by half a second.

In the second pairing of the 500-meter race, Grishin finished with a time of 40.6 seconds, which was matched by two other skaters. However, Mr. McDermott, in the 17th pair, surpassed this time.

Crossing the finish line in just 40.1 seconds, Mr. McDermott shattered Grishin’s Olympic record, preventing the Soviet legend from adding to his four gold medals from the previous Winter Games.

During that time, a Cold War was taking place, and its effects spilled over into the Olympics. Mr. McDermott reflected on this in a 2010 interview with MLive Media Group, stating, “The Russians arrived in 1956 and controlled every sport. It was tough to beat them in anything. So, going up against them, you tried a little harder.”
