Illinois Sleeping Man shooting: An Illinois man, Mark M. Dicara, aged 62, has been arrested and is facing two felony gun possession charges following an incident in which he accidentally shot himself in the leg. The incident occurred while Dicara was dreaming that his home was being broken into.
Deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department apprehended Dicara on Monday, relating to an occurrence on April 10 at his residence in Lake Barrington. Upon receiving a report of a gunshot wound victim around 10 p.m., law enforcement officers promptly arrived at Dicara’s home. They discovered a gunshot wound on his leg and immediately applied a tourniquet due to significant blood loss.
Subsequent investigations by law enforcement revealed that the gunshot injury was not the result of a burglary attempt, as initially believed. Rather, Dicara had wounded himself using his own .357 Magnum while he was in the midst of a dream where he perceived an intruder entering his home.
In his dream-induced state, Dicara discharged his firearm at what he believed was the intruder. However, upon waking up, he realized the entire ordeal had been a nightmare turned unfortunate reality. The bullet had passed through Dicara’s leg and bedding but did not penetrate the neighboring wall.
During the investigation into the accidental shooting, it was discovered that Dicara’s Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card had been revoked in the past. As a result, owning the firearm he had used to defend against the imaginary intruder in his dream constituted an illegal possession.
The exact reason for the revocation of Dicara’s FOID card remains unknown. However, on June 9, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized charges against him for two felonies: possession of a firearm without a valid FOID card (a class 3 felony) and reckless discharge of a firearm (a class 4 felony).
Dicara was released from custody after posting a bond of $150,000. His next court appearance is scheduled for June 29.
