Spotify Executive And Harry Case Details: Spotify executive and popular podcaster Bill Simmons strongly criticized Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, referring to them as “grifters” following the termination of their multi-year partnership with Spotify on Friday.
During his self-titled podcast on Friday, Simmons expressed his regret for not being involved in the negotiation process of Meghan and Harry’s departure from Spotify. He humorously suggested that they should have launched a podcast called “The F**king Grifters” together. Simmons also mentioned his intention to share the story of a Zoom call he had with Harry, where he attempted to assist him with a podcast idea, considering it as one of his noteworthy experiences. However, his overall sentiment towards the couple was negative, concluding with an expletive and reiterating his belief that they were engaged in deceptive practices.
The collaboration between Archewell Audio, the production company owned by the couple, and Spotify was originally planned to include a variety of programs. However, in the end, only one series and a holiday special were produced.
The series, titled “Archetypes,” aimed to explore, analyze, and challenge the stereotypes that hinder the progress of women. Its description highlighted Meghan conducting interviews with notable guests such as Serena Williams, Mariah Carey, Paris Hilton, and Trevor Noah.
Recently, Archewell Audio and Spotify jointly announced their decision to part ways. This development occurred merely two weeks after Spotify revealed a restructuring plan that involved cutting 200 jobs within its podcast division, which accounted for approximately 2% of its global workforce. The decision was described as a “strategic realignment” by Spotify.
In response to Simmons’ comments, CNN has reached out to both Archewell and Spotify for their input. Simmons had previously expressed his dissatisfaction with Prince Harry during a podcast episode in January 2023, expressing his embarrassment about sharing Spotify with him. He questioned Harry’s talents and relevance, stating that his only claim to fame was being born into the royal family and subsequently leaving it.
Simmons further criticized Harry’s current lifestyle in Montecito, highlighting his involvement in selling documentaries and podcasts, suggesting that people only pay attention to him when he discusses the royal family and complains about them.
As per Forbes’ report, Spotify acquired Simmons’ sports and culture website called “The Ringer” in 2020 for over $200 million. This acquisition included a collection of more than 30 podcasts. Since then, Simmons has taken on the role of heading podcast innovation and monetization at Spotify. He also hosts multiple podcasts, including “The Rewatchables.”
