Pregnant Woman Shot And Killed In Parked Car In DC: Two individuals wielding assault rifles opened fire on a car, resulting in the tragic death of a pregnant young woman who was eight months along. However, she managed to give birth to a baby girl at a nearby hospital before succumbing to her injuries.
The newborn is currently in critical condition. The incident took place on a bustling street in Washington, D.C., while authorities tirelessly searched for the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
According to a news release by the police, the passenger in the vehicle, identified as 22-year-old Samya Gill, was fatally shot but managed to give birth before passing away. In an interview with Fox affiliate 7News, Gill’s mother revealed that she had seen her newborn granddaughter on Friday night. Fortunately, the child was not harmed by the gunfire, although she remains in critical condition, showing slight improvement as reported by the station.
Gill’s mother described the baby as beautiful and expressed her desire for the capture of those responsible for her daughter’s tragedy. A fundraising website was set up to cover expenses related to the care of Baby Zailey. The site mentioned that Zailey was due to be born within a few weeks but required an emergency C-section to save her life.
The unidentified driver of the targeted vehicle also sustained non-life-threatening injuries, with no further information available regarding their relationship to Gill.
During a press conference, Assistant Chief Andre Wright of the Metropolitan Police Department condemned the appalling act and urged both the perpetrators and any witnesses to come forward. He referred to the incident as a brazen act, stating that such a heinous crime cannot go unnoticed by the community.
Surveillance footage captured two armed individuals, one wearing a white hoodie and dark pants, while the other was dressed entirely in dark clothing. The footage showed them exiting a white four-door sedan, firing into the victim’s vehicle, and quickly fleeing the scene.
The victims’ car managed to travel approximately one mile before coming to a stop in a busy commercial area.
In an effort to aid the investigation, the police announced a reward of up to $25,000 for any information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the shooting that occurred at 11:20 a.m. on Thursday in the 300 block of 37th Street, Southeast.
Although the nature of the relationship between the victims and the attackers is currently unknown, the police have classified the incident as a targeted attack.
“We are aware that this was an isolated incident,” stated Chief Wright. “The vehicle entered the block, passing several individuals in the community, and the assailants specifically approached and fired into this vehicle.”
