She joined Alpha Kappa Alpha, a sorority with a predominance of African Americans. She worked as an intern at The Seattle Times, The Miami Herald once more, the Botswanan newspaper Mmegi, and The Washington Post while also attending school. Her ambitions to work as a civil rights journalist were stimulated by Gwen Ifill, an African-American journalist, and recent media coverage of Emmett Till.

2015 saw Alcindor graduate from New York University with a master’s degree in “broadcast news and documentary filmmaking.”

 

Lou Alcindor, also known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, is not related to Yamiche Alcindor.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, a former American basketball player, played 20 seasons in the National Basketball Association with the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers.

In his career as a center, Abdul-Jabbar earned the NBA Most Valuable Player Award (MVP) a record six times.

He also made the NBA All-NBA Team 15 times, the NBA All-Defensive Team 11 times, and he was an All-Star a record 19 times.

In addition to helping two additional NBA championship teams, he played on six of them.  Kareem received two votes for NBA Finals MVP. He has played on three NBA milestone teams.  Kareem is regarded as one of the all-time greats and was lauded as the finest basketball player by Pat Riley, Isiah Thomas, and Julius Erving.

At the exclusive Power Memorial High School in New York City, he played athletics as Lou Alcindor, helping his squad to a 71-game winning run.

When he played for John Wooden on three straight teams that won the national championship, Jerry Norman, an assistant coach at the University of California, Los Angeles, recruited him.

He won the award three times, setting a record for the NCAA Tournament MVP. Alcindor played six seasons in Milwaukee after the Bucks, who had only been in existence for one season at the time, picked him with the first overall pick.

He took the Muslim name Kareem Abdul-Jabbar at the age of 24, the year he helped the Bucks win their first NBA championship.

One of the top scorers in the league, he became well-known for his trademark skyhook shot.

In 1975, he was transferred to the Lakers, where he spent the next 14 seasons of his career and contributed to five more NBA championships.

The contributions of Abdul were very helpful during the Showtime era of Lakers basketball. In the 20 years that Jabbar played in the NBA, his teams made the playoffs 18 times, made it past the first round 14 times, and won the NBA Finals 10 times.

The NBA’s all-time leader in points (38,387), games played (1,560), minutes (57,446), field goals made (15,837), field goal attempts (28,307), blocked shots (3,189), defensive rebounds (9,394), career victories (1,074), and personal fouls (4,657) when he retired at age 42 in 1989.

He still holds the record for most points scored, made field goals, and wins in a career.

In terms of rebounds and blocks of shots, he is now third in history.

In 2016, according to ESPN, he was the second-best NBA player ever (after Michael Jordan), the greatest center of all time in 2007, and the greatest college basketball player ever in 2008.

Abdul-Jabbar worked as a martial artist, basketball coach, best-selling book, and actor. He also appeared in a 1972 Bruce Lee film.

In January 2012, Abdul-Jabbar agreed to work as a cultural ambassador for the US, according to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

At the press conference for the announcement of the historical significance of African Americans as ambassadors of American culture, Abdul-Jabbar said the following: “I remember President Kennedy, one of my idols at the time, seeing Louis Armstrong perform it for him. So it’s nice to be following in his footsteps.”

Abdul-Jabbar has traveled to Brazil as part of this job to inspire local children to seek education. In 2016, President Barack Obama awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

In January 2017, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin appointed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee.

According to the United States Mint, Abdul-Jabbar is an enthusiastic coin collector whose interest in Alexander Hamilton’s biography led him to take up the hobby.

Yamiche Alcindor wed Nathaline Cline, a reporter for the Loudoun Times-Mirror, in 2018.

The Loudoun Times-Mirror, a weekly newspaper with its main office in Leesburg, Virginia, is owned and published by Peter Arundel. It has covered local news, sports, business, and community in Leesburg and Loudoun County for Virginia over 200 years.

In November 2015, Loudoun Times-Mirror acquired the holdings of the biweekly periodicals Leesburg Today, Ashburn Today, and the website leesburgtoday.com.

As skilled a journalist as her husband, if not more so, is Yamiche Alcindor. Alcindor received the “Emerging Journalist of the Year” award from the National Association of African-American Journalists in 2013.

She was a 2016 Shorty Award finalist in the category of Journalist.

The following year, during the Toner Prize ceremony at Syracuse University, Alcindor was given a tribute in honor of the late journalist Gwen Ifill, who had died away in November 2016.

On “The Root 100,” an annual list of the most influential African Americans between the ages of 25 and 45 published by the magazine The Root, Alcindor came in at number 13.

Inside Yamiche Alcindor’s Family Background

Yamiche Alcindor, who was born in Haiti to Haitian parents, speaks Haitian Creole quite well.

She is an ardent Catholic who is Haitian-American. She is, nonetheless, incredibly committed to her work. Alcindor’s first full-time job was as a Newsday journalist located in Melville, New York.

She reported on events including the 2010 Haitian earthquake during her two years of employment there.

Alcindor joined USA Today in December 2011 to cover national breaking news as a multimedia reporter.

For the newspaper, Alcindor reported on a wide range of issues, including the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the death of Trayvon Martin, the unrest in Ferguson, and the protests in Baltimore. In 2013, she began contributing as a guest on NBC News and MSNBC.

The Rachel Maddow Show, PoliticsNation with Al Sharpton, Meet the Press, Hardball with Chris Matthews, and Morning Joe were just a few of the shows she appeared on. She left her job as a national political columnist at USA Today in November 2015 to work for The New York Times.

For The New York Times, she covered the presidential campaigns of Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders. The Trouble with Innocence, a movie about an innocent man who was falsely convicted of murder, was another project she worked on.

She further had an appearance in the 2018 television documentary The Fourth Estate, which followed reporters from the New York Times throughout the first 100 days of the Trump administration.

When John Yang was elevated to the role of national correspondent for the PBS NewsHour in January 2018, she took up Yang’s duties.

She started doing this after Trump became president. During the sixth Democratic debate of the 2020 election cycle, she was one of the moderators.

Erik Wemple of The Washington Post claims that during press briefings, President Donald Trump frequently made fun of Alcindor.

Alcindor received the 2020 Aldo Beckman Award for Overall Excellence in President Coverage from the President Correspondents’ Association.

She quit PBS NewsHour in January 2022. In May 2021, Alcindor took over as host of Washington Week. Alcindor began working as a journalist in Washington for NBC News in March 2022.
