The Maine State Police announced on Saturday night that four students from the Maine Maritime Academy perished in a collision early on Saturday morning. Injuries that weren’t life-threatening were treated at hospitals by three more schoolchildren.

In a statement, Jerry S. Paul, the president of Maine Maritime Academy, said that the school’s community was “heartbroken” at the incident.

Chase Fossett of Gardiner was one of the four students died in a collision early on Saturday morning in Castine when the car they were traveling in hit a tree.

At Gardiner Area High School, Chase Fossett, 21, majored in logistics and international business. Chad Kempton, the high school’s principal, remembers Fossett as a popular student-athlete.

Chase was a lovely young guy, according to Chad, who was really kind and courteous, a terrific part of their community, a student-athlete, and had many good friends who are presently going through a lot of hardship. Following the news of Saturday’s horrific vehicle incident in Castine, which killed four students from the Maine Maritime Academy and gravely wounded three more, many towns in Maine are in disbelief.

A vigil was being prepared for 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the modest public institution in the seaside town of Castine, which has around 1,000 students enrolled. Joshua Goncalves-Radding, another student, lost control of the car they were riding in on Route 166 near Castine, hit a tree, and caught fire early on Saturday morning. They died as a result.

The victims have been provably identified as 20-year-old York, Maine, resident Brian Kenealy, 21-year-old Chase Fossett of Gardiner, Maine, 22-year-old Luke Simpson of Rockport, Massachusetts, and 20-year-old Riley Ignacio-Cameron of Aquinnah, Massachusetts, according to an email from Shannon Moss, the public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

People who knew the youngsters sent heartfelt tributes and condolences online, showing their grief in spades.

Three accident survivors, according to Moss, turned out to be students at Maine Maritime Academy. They were transported to local hospitals to get non-life-threatening medical attention. The victims were sent to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta.

Shore Road was closed for more than eight hours as troopers from the Maine State Police investigated the accident. The road is now open once more.
