In a statement, George stated, “A recent scan indicated that my cancer has progressed further, so it’s back to some tough stuff.” George returned to BBC News at Six in April 2022.

Alagiah also mentioned missing his workplace and coworkers. It was difficult for him not to attend the newsroom since it was such a crucial part of his life in terms of keeping him engaged and motivated.

George Alagiah’s health is deteriorating day by day, yet he is focused on living and battling death as his disease grows. He stays upbeat and eager to return to the studio as soon as possible.

In an interview with The Times in 2022, George Alagiah acknowledged that the disease was incurable and had spread to his liver, lungs, and lymph nodes.

Alagiah has had 17 rounds of chemotherapy since his original illness eight years ago. He stated that if England had the same bowel cancer screening system as Scotland, he would have a higher chance of survival.

Bowel cancer screening in Scotland begins at the age of 50 for both men and women. Nevertheless, this is not the case in England because it begins at 60. If England began screening at 50, as Scotland does, he may be examined at least four times before the age of 60.

George also stated that “survival rates are amazing if cancer is caught early,” and he criticized Scotland for utilizing it rather than England. Since then, he has advocated for lowering the bowel cancer screening age in England.

Bowel cancer kills around 16,000 individuals in the United Kingdom each year. It is the second leading cause of mortality in the United Kingdom, after lung cancer.

In 1984, George married Frances Robathan. In Durham University, Alagiah met the love of his life. They’ve been married for 37 years and have two children, Adam (35) and Matthew (31) Alagiah.

Frances was born in London in 1960. She joined the Fairtrade Foundation in 2002 as Senior Partnerships Adviser after working with the organization for 18 years.

The Alagiah dwells in North London’s Stoke Newington. George also added that his wife and family have been extremely supportive in his fight against the dreadful sickness he has been afflicted with.
