According to the prosecution, Jarell Harris shot Miller eleven times.

On March 4, as Sedrick Miller, 42, went down the street holding the hands of his 5-year-old and a 6-month-old in a car seat, a man approached them from behind and repeatedly fired his gun, according to the findings of the investigation.

When the police arrived, they found Miller dead and what seemed to be gunshot wounds.

When Miller arrived at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, he was immediately transferred there, where authorities eventually declared him dead.

According to the court record, Jarell Harris, also known as Jarrell Harris, admitted guilt to voluntary manslaughter in connection with the 2022 shooting death of Sedrick Miller, 42.

He was sentenced to 13 years in jail on January 25, 2023 in Northeast Washington after submitting a guilty plea.

In a plea deal, Harris acknowledged that he confronted the victim in the 2300 block of 18th Street NE and then shot him about a dozen times.

Miller and his kids were present when the attack took place.

The autopsy revealed that Miller had received eleven gunshot wounds, including five to the thorax, four to the face and neck, one to each upper right and left arm, and five to the face.

A little more than two months after fleeing in a car and turning into a wanted man, Harris was finally captured on one count of willing armed manslaughter.

According to D.C. Police Cmdr. William Fitzgerald, Miller’s murder was “one of the horrible incidents we’ve had here in the Fifth District in some years.”

The community was horrified by Miller’s heinous murder.

“We are in a space now where there is no concern, no regard for life,” local resident Lauraline Gregory told Fox 5 D.C.

Jarrell David Harris Had A Substantial Criminal History Before Killing Miller

According to court documents, Harris had a “significant criminal past” prior to killing Miller.

His criminal record included convictions for assault, robbery, and illegal possession of a pistol in Prince George’s County, Maryland, as well as Washington, D.C.

Not to mention, when Harris pleaded guilty to the allegations against him, he showed contrition for his actions and a desire to spare Miller’s kids the anxiety of a trial.

The defendant’s actions in this case are tragic not just because Sedrick Miller’s death, which had a serious effect on his family, was the result.

Additionally, they traumatized (his) children, according to the prosecution’s memo outlining the sentence.

Following his arrest on May 6, 2022, Miller was booked into jail and is still there.

In announcing the sentence, U.S. Attorney Graves and Chief Contee lauded the investigators from the Metropolitan Police Department for their efforts.

The victim/witness advocates Jennifer Clark and Latrice Washington-Williams who worked on the case at the U.S. Attorney’s Office were also thanked for their efforts.

They also thanked Assistant U.S. Attorney Prava Palacharla, who investigated the case and oversaw the prosecution, for her work.
