Karl’s mother, Elisabeth, was originally from Berlin and worked as a lingerie saleswoman when she met Otto. She was born in Sigmaringen, Germany, in 1897 to Karl Bahlmann and Emilie Drecker.

Karl Lagerfeld’s family was part of the Old Catholic Church, and he had an older sister named Martha Christiane and an older half-sister named Theodora Dorothea.

During World War II, Lagerfeld’s family was largely spared from the difficulties of the time due to his father’s business interests in Germany through the company Glücksklee-Milch GmbH.
