Don’t Pick Up The Phone, A Netflix Original Film, Details David Stewart’s Alleged Misdeeds

Don’t Pick Up the Phone, the newest Netflix documentary series, explores the investigation of the hoax calls that caused employees around the US to be subjected to strip searches. When 18-year-old McDonald’s employee Louise Ogborn was made to undress and commit a sexual act on her boss’s fiancé in 2004, the case initially caught the attention of authorities. Ogborn, however, was not the fake caller’s first victim; their scheme started in 1992.

Buddy Stump, a detective with the Mount Washington Police, found that same calls had been made in other parts of the country at least ten years earlier. At a McDonald’s in Hinesville, Georgia, a 55-year-old janitor cavity-searched a 19-year-old cashier. A female employee, age 17, was subjected to a strip search by a Burger King management in Fargo, North Dakota. A Taco Bell manager in Phoenix got a call and then conducted a customer strip search.

Vic Flaherty, a detective in Massachusetts, helped Stump discover the offender was making these prank calls using calling cards. These calling cards were subsequently linked to David Richard Stewart after being tracked to Panama City, Florida.

David Stewart, A Suspect In The McDonald’s Strip Search Hoax, Was Found Not Guilty

Stewart worked for the Prison Corporation of America as a corrections officer, as described in the Netflix true crime series (CCA). The jail in Panama City is run by this private prison. When authorities learned Stewart’s identify, he was 38 years old and had previously gone to a local police school. Additionally, he served as a volunteer deputy for a local Florida police force.

Stewart was charged with orchestrating the strip search fake during his criminal trial, which took place in the fall of 2006. Stewart was facing 15 years in jail for “charges ranging from soliciting sodomy to impersonating a police officer,” according to ABC News. There were no eyewitnesses who may have identified Stewart as the caller. Because there was only circumstantial evidence against Stewart, he was cleared of all counts.

David Stewart’s Whereabouts In 2022 Are Unknown

Stewart has maintained a low profile ever since his trial. It is uncertain if he is still in Florida or if he has migrated to another part of the country.

Why Did David Stewart Target Fast-Food Chains Like McDonald’s And Taco Bell?

Stewart’s calls, in the words of clinical psychologist Jeff Gardere, gave him the opportunity to “virtual voyeurise” his victims in order to satisfy a “God-like complex” (via ABC). Stewart had an easy time picking on fast-food workers because “everything is by the book” for them.

You’re OK if you follow the instructions, according to Gardere. “I think he chose fast food outlets because he understood that once you took them out of that book and away from the manual or the processes, they would become lost,” says the author.

David Stewart’s Phone Hoax Inspired The Movie ‘Compliance’

Based on what happened at the Mount Washington McDonald’s, the 2012 movie Compliance, starring Ann Dowd, Dreama Walker, Pat Healy, and Bill Camp, was called Compliance. The movie may be streamed on Prime Video as of the time of publishing.
