Ovidio is the leader of “Los Chapitos,” or “the tiny Chapos,” a branch of the Pacific Cartel that tried to obstruct the arrest by erecting barricades, torching cars, and sparking shootouts that claimed the lives of 29 people, including ten soldiers. The mayhem shocked the entire country, not for the first time.
After Ovidio Guzmán was detained by federal officials in October 2019, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador issued a release order to prevent further bloodshed.
