On November 5, 1927, a sharecropper gave birth to Dr. George Clyde Debnam in Youngsville, Franklin County. After finishing his secondary education in Youngsville, he relocated to Raleigh when he was 15 years old. Dr. Debnam, a native of Raleigh, North Carolina, relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, to enroll in Meharry Medical College and serve in the Korean War. He put a lot of effort towards advancing healthcare, education, and social advancement in the Raleigh neighborhood.

In Raleigh, Dr. Debnam practiced medicine for 50 years and 6 months. He also oversaw a sizable hospital practice and treated patients as they entered nursing homes in addition to his own practice. Numerous people in the Raleigh area received top-notch care from him, particularly those in Southeast Raleigh and Wake County’s Fuquay and Holly Springs. Dr. Debnam received his training in family medicine and spent many years practicing as a surgeon, general practitioner, and obstetrician.

Dr. George C. Debnam was recognized by the governor of North Carolina as the physician responsible for more than 10,000 births during the state’s history. Additionally, he carried out more than 5,000 procedures.

When Wake Medical Center (then Wake Memorial Hospital) first opened, Dr. Debnam was the first physician to admit patients there, highlighting his crucial contribution to the integration of Raleigh’s healthcare system. Dr. Debnam started his career at Saint Agnes Hospital, Raleigh’s segregated facility for African Americans. He is the last employee to have worked at both Saint Agnes and Wake Health Center and the last member of the original Wake Health Center medical team to depart.

His twin daughters, Marie Georgette Debnam, MD, and Marjorie Lynnette Debnam, MD, who joined him in practice after completing their internal medicine residencies at the Harvard Medical School affiliated Cambridge Hospital in 1995, continue to uphold his legacy even though he retired from active practice in 2001. In 2013, the company moved to a new office location due to its growth.
