The Carter Center announced on Twitter that former U.S. President Jimmy Carter decided to spend his last days at home with his family and accept hospice care rather than further medical attention after a string of brief hospital stays. “His family and medical staff are fully behind him. The Carter family urges discretion during this trying time and thanks all of his supporters.

About the circumstances of his most recent hospital visits or his choice to seek hospice care, the facility made no comments.

Mr. Carter recently overcame a number of health issues, including repeated falls and a battle with melanoma that spread to his liver and brain.

He announced on August 12 that he had been diagnosed with metastatic cancer but he did not specify where it had first started.

On August 20, Carter said that melanoma had been found in his brain and liver, that he had started receiving the immunotherapy drug pembrolizumab, and that he was about to start radiation therapy.

His medical care was under the supervision of Emory Healthcare in Atlanta. He released a statement on December 6, 2015, claiming that his medical exams had found no indication of cancer.

On November 11, 2019, Carter was taken to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta for care to reduce pressure on his head brought on by bleeding from his falls.

On November 27, he was released from the hospital after the treatment went smoothly. Carter was discharged from the hospital on December 4 after being readmitted on December 2 for a urinary tract infection.
