Shue was born on October 6, 1963, in Wilmington, Delaware, to Anne Brewster (née Wells) and James William Shue, a former congressional candidate, attorney, and real estate developer who later became president of the International Food and Beverage Corporation. She was raised in the American city of South Orange, New Jersey. Her parents separated when she was nine years old. They are descended from Shue. William, Andrew, and John were Shue’s three brothers with whom she was raised, and the three of them remained close throughout her life.
