On Monday afternoon, state and local law enforcement agencies responded to a bulletin from Waterford Police asking them to be on the lookout for a troubled male driving a car who may also be carrying a weapon.

The radio alert reached Ledyard Police Chief John Rich’s department at 12:07 p.m., and at 12:18 and 12:20, respectively, State Police and Ledyard Police arrived at the cemetery.

According to a State Police report, Lapkowski was found by officials lying on the ground and not breathing. Emergency medical personnel pronounced him dead there and then.

The cemetery is where Joanne Witt-Lapkowski was laid to rest after her death in 1996. She was the biological mother of Lapkowski.

He was sentenced to 40 years in prison, and his release date is 2036. State Police say they are currently looking into Lapkowski’s death.

Lapkowski’s two sons and his wife Shana Golden are left behind. Lapkowski and Golden’s divorce was still pending at the time of his death despite being filed in November.

Rich, the head of Ledyard, said, “It’s tragic.” We are praying for the officer’s family as well as his colleagues at the Waterford Police Department.
