Gary Bowser Wikipedia And Age: What Did The Nintendo Hacker Do?

Gary Bowser, a Canadian hacker, gained notoriety as a member of Team Xecuter, a group involved in the sale of mod chips and jailbreaking devices for various gaming consoles, including Nintendo Switch, 3DS, NES Classic Edition, and others. Unlike the usual practice among console hackers who share tools and exploits for educational purposes without charge, Team Xecuter’s commercial approach was met with controversy within the gaming community. It is important to note that Gary Bowser is not related to Doug Bowser, the president of Nintendo of America, or Bowser, the iconic antagonist from the Mario franchise.

Gary Bowser, who served as the public relations and marketing manager of Team Xecuter, a notorious hacking group, was involved in the sale of their products for profit. Team Xecuter was known to use stolen or leaked code from other hackers in their devices, which were marketed as enabling legitimate purposes like homebrew and backups but also facilitated piracy and cheating.

In 2020, Nintendo took legal action against Team Xecuter, as well as several resellers of their devices, accusing them of violating their intellectual property rights and circumventing technological measures. Law enforcement agencies also collaborated to arrest and indict three members of Team Xecuter, including Gary Bowser, along with Max Louarn and Yuanning Chen.

Gary Bowser Age: How Old Is He?

As of 2023, Gary Bowser’s exact date of birth remains unknown, but he is reported to be 53 years old.

Bowser has been charged with 11 felony counts, including conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to circumvent technological measures, trafficking in circumvention devices, and conspiracy to commit money laundering. He has been accused of designing and selling “circumvention devices,” such as the SX Pro and the SX OS, which were intended to bypass Nintendo’s security measures and enable users to run unauthorized software on their Switch consoles. These devices were alleged to facilitate activities such as piracy and unauthorized software usage, leading to the charges against Gary Bowser.

Gary Bowser Arrest Details

In September 2020, Bowser was arrested in the Dominican Republic and subsequently deported to the United States, where he faced federal felony charges. In November 2021, he pleaded guilty to two charges associated with the distribution of Team Xecuter’s devices and agreed to pay a $4.5 million penalty. As part of the plea agreement, Bowser also agreed to cooperate with authorities in their ongoing investigation of Team Xecuter. In exchange for his cooperation, the remaining nine charges against him were dropped.

In February 2022, Bowser was sentenced to 40 months in prison for his involvement in Team Xecuter’s activities. Apart from the criminal case, he also faced a civil lawsuit from Nintendo, which accused him of three counts of copyright infringement and sought damages of $2500 per trafficked device, along with $150,000 for each copyright violation. In December 2021, Bowser agreed to settle the lawsuit by paying Nintendo $10 million.

However, Bowser was released from prison early in April 2023 due to his age, medical condition, and nationality. He returned to Canada, where he stated that he would have to pay Nintendo a percentage of his monthly gross income as part of the restitution agreement, estimated to be between 25% to 30%. He also mentioned that he may not have to pay the $4.5 million fine imposed by the court, as he had only paid Nintendo $175 from his prison earnings so far.

Gary Bowser’s case is a prominent example of Nintendo’s firm stance against hackers and pirates, reflecting their proactive efforts to protect their intellectual property and combat illegal activities in the gaming industry.
