According to a police report on the incident, a 9-year-old boy shot himself on New Year’s Day in a crowded Chicago home while pointing a loaded revolver at his own head.
Although Jarvis Watts’ death was pronounced a homicide by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office and was the result of several gunshot wounds, police classified the incident as a death investigation rather than a homicide inquiry, according to WFLD.
Police did not find a firearm in the home, and at least one witness told investigators they were not aware there was a gun there despite the obvious gunshot wounds.
Police did discover a spent. an unopened 45-caliber bullet casing According to police reports, a 27-year-old guy fled the house before officers arrived along with a 40-caliber shell casing.
A second child who was a witness claimed to have seen Watts playing with the gun in an upstairs bedroom prior to the incident on Sunday night.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Jarvis and five other kids were present in the house when the incident occurred. Two police reports on the incident give somewhat different accounts of what happened; one of them claims Watts’ mother told the kids to go get changed. After hearing “loud screams” and seeing her kid begging for her as he descended the stairs, she waited in the kitchen before fainting on the living room floor.
Another woman in the house is said to have heard a “loud pop” in the other account. She contacted 911 after discovering the youngster on the floor with injuries to his hand, neck, and face. He was rushed to Comer Children’s Hospital, where doctors quickly declared him dead.
