According to CNN, Kirstie Alley’s mother, Lillian Maxine, commonly known as “Mickie” to her loved ones, was killed in a drunk driving accident. Kirstie’s father, Robert, was critically injured in the crash but recovered well.

Although New York and New Jersey passed their first drunk driving laws in the early twentieth century, drunk driving was still considered a “folk crime” by the 1960s, much like hazing was until recently, according to Russman Law.

However, the laws were much laxer than they are now when Kirstie Alley’s mother was murdered because they did not become strict until the late 1980s.

Kirstie Alley soon earned a “bully” image in Hollywood after her mother died, according to Radar. She stated that she didn’t begin to accept her mother’s death until she had dealt with her own troubles.
