According to sources, a suspect has been held by the Barton County Sheriff’s Office in relation to the January 24 murder of Mary Robin Walter in 1980.
Sheriff Brian Bellendir issued a news announcement stating that Steven L. Hanks, age 68, had been detained in Oxford, Kansas, and was in route to Barton County. According to the records, Hanks lives in Burden, Kansas.
The Barton County Attorney’s Office, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, and the BCSO will have a news conference together on Friday, December 9, 2022.
The victim’s 24-year-old husband, Douglas Walter, returned home from work at 6:45 that evening to find his wife dead in the rear bedroom where the murder had taken place. He left for work before eight o’clock.
A joint news conference between the Barton County Sheriff’s Office, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, and the Barton County Attorney’s Office will be held to offer an update on the investigation.

Around 6:38 p.m., Sheriff Brian Bellendir said that the 68-year-old suspect, Steven L. Hanks of Burden, Kansas, had been taken to Barton County.

The offender was released from parole and granted parole, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections, in August 1991 and December 1993, respectively.
