Jerry explained in an interview that because his father was never at home, his mother had to work as a riveter in the navy yard during the Second World War. Particularly in the summer, they had to be in bed by six in order for her to get to work.

While the other children were playing, he was in bed with the window open, wondering how they had ended up in bed and asking his mother. His mother explained to him that he wasn’t like the other kids and that the following morning she had to leave for work.

Together with Lee Stewart and Bob Horn, Blavat made his television debut in 1953 on the original Bandstand on WFIL-TV.

He handled Danny and the Juniors’ cross-country tour in 1956, and from 1958 to 1959, he served as Don Rickles’ valet. In 1960, he began his career in radio. By 1963, Camden, Atlantic City, Trenton, Pottstown, Wilmington, and Allentown all had syndicated versions of their program on the air.

In the 1960s, Blavat co-founded the Lost Nite and Crimson record labels with Jared Weinstein and Jerry Greene, the creator of Collectables Records. The three shared ownership of the now-defunct Record Museum record store business, which had its headquarters in Philadelphia.

Blavat developed and served as the host of a weekly television program called The Discophonic Scene from 1965 to 1967. In addition, he had guest appearances on a number of TV shows, including The Mod Squad, The Monkees, The Tonight Show, and The Joey Bishop Show.
