Bobby Beathard, born Robert Knig Beathard Jr. on January 24, 1937 in Zanesville, Ohio, moved to El Segundo, California when he was four years old. He graduated from El Segundo High School and went on to play football for LSU in college.

Beathard began his career as a part-time scout with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1963, although he briefly left the team to scout for the American Football League before returning to Kansas City in 1966. His first AFL championship ring came with the Chiefs in 1966.
