Officers from the Arizona Department of Public Safety detained Tucson resident John Anthony Cole as he traveled toward California on Interstate 10, according to KOLD.
Authorities claimed to have discovered pieces of Antoine Smith’s corpse in his car. They discovered Smith’s head and hands there, a source told KOLD.
The 45-year-old Cole, according to the Phoenix Police Department, showed them where he had thrown additional parts of the 28-year-old Smith’s corpse after confessing to killing him.
According to investigators, Cole abducted Smith on September 16 from his Phoenix home and took him to Tucson. He said that Smith attacked him when he stopped on the way to use the restroom.
Cole allegedly admitted to the officers that he had strangled his hostage after placing him in a submission hold and transported the body to his Tucson residence. Once there, he purchased tools to dissect Smith’s body, including cleaning equipment.
Reporters took note of a crime scene outside Federal Correctional Institution-Tucson the day after Cole was apprehended on September 20; they later found that the area was related to the kidnapping and murder.
According to KOLD, Cole was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated harassment during an incident earlier this year and was given a sentence of more than 15 years in federal prison for a narcotics offense in 2003.
