Paulo Bento won’t be in the team dugout for South Korea’s final group game against Portugal on December 2.

After South Korea’s 3-2 loss to Ghana on Monday in a FIFA World Cup 2022 Group H match, referee Anthony Taylor issued head coach Bento a red card for using profanity.

There were reasons for hope despite South Korea’s defeat because there were ten extra minutes left in the second half.

South Korea, the side one goal down, was awarded a corner in the last seconds of the second half’s extra time.

The South Korean team thought they would have one more chance to level the game, but Taylor called full-time after the ball was thrown out for a corner, infuriating the South Korean players and Support staff.

Taylor was not pleased when Bento approached him right away to express his disapproval of the decision. Taylor then gave Bento a straight red card as a warning.

In South Korea’s opening match against Uruguay, Bento was also issued a warning and a yellow card.

 

FIFA World Cup 2022 Was A Part Of Bento’s South Korean Contract

On August 17, 2018, Bento was chosen to lead the South Korean national team, and his contract covered the 2022 World Cup.

In the quarterfinals of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates, the squad was defeated 1-0 by eventual champions Qatar.

Bento led his team to the 2019 EAFF E-1 Football Championship after their 1-0 victory over Japan. This was their second consecutive win over those opponents and third overall victory in the tournament.

On February 1, 2022, the Taegeuk Warriors under the leadership of Bento defeated Syria 2-0 to earn a spot in the country’s eleventh consecutive World Cup.

On November 23, during the group round of the finals in Qatar, which finished in a scoreless draw, he was given a booking for dissent against Uruguay.

In the following match, a 3-2 loss to Ghana, the native of Portugal received a red card for arguing with the referee Anthony Taylor after the final whistle.

 

Prior To Leading South Korea, Paulo Bento Managed Portugal

On September 20, 2010, Bento was named Portugal’s manager in Queiroz’s stead after the coach was let go owing to a rocky start to the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.

He beat Denmark 3-1 in his first game in command on October 8 in Porto.

On November 17, 2010, Portugal humiliated the World Cup champions Spain 4-0, handing its Iberian neighbors their worst loss since June 13, 1963.

He led his country’s team to the Euro 2012 semifinals in Poland and Ukraine, where they were defeated by eventual champion Spain on penalties.

Bento led Portugal to a 4-2 aggregate victory over Sweden in the playoffs after finishing second in the 2014 World Cup qualifying, securing a spot in the Brazil World Cup.

On April 9, he extended his agreement till until Euro 2016. Nevertheless, due to goal differential, the United States advanced to the World Cup’s knockout stages despite defeating Ghana 2-1 in the decisive match.

Bento was fired by the Portuguese Football Federation on September 11, 2014, following a 0-1 home loss to Albania to open the Euro 2016 qualifying round.
