There’s always this nagging, gnawing sadness, said David. It’s always there, even if I’m not always aware of it.

Smith’s determination to let the past go is not shared by everyone in her life. “She can talk about looking for a new life, according to her relative, but the rest of us are still in sadness for her sons, Michael and Alex.”

Smith, who was 23 at the time, reported that she had been kidnapped by a Black man to the police on October 25, 1994. She reported that he left the car with her two young sons still inside.

For nine days, she pleaded for their safe return on live television. Everything, however, was a lie.

Smith admitted that there was no carjacker and that she had allowed her car to drift into a lake while Michael, 3, and Alex, 14, were still secured into their car seats. Her story began to fall apart as she made these admissions.

She was privately meeting a man who did not want children, therefore she had a hidden agenda. The incident garnered international attention and even reached the cover of PEOPLE.

Smith was convicted guilty of two counts of murder and is currently serving a life sentence at the Leath Correctional Institution in Greenwood, South Carolina.

Smith’s time in jail has been plagued by transgressions like taking illicit substances, self-injury, and having sex with a guard.

What Became Of Susan Smith?

Susan Smith was convicted guilty of killing her two children, Michael, 3, and Alexander, 14 months old at the time, by drowning them in a lake in South Carolina in 1994.

Smith received a life sentence with a 30-year window for parole.

At the time of the murders, Smith, who was then married to David, was having an adulterous relationship with a wealthy man who allegedly didn’t want children.

Smith killed her children for Tom Findley, the owner’s son at the company where she worked as a secretary.

Smith believed that getting rid of her children was the only way to win him over. Findley reportedly ended their relationship a few days before Smith committed the crimes.

After Smith tied her children into the back of her car and let it roll into a lake, Michael, 3, and 14-month-old Alex perished. She originally told the police that a black man had stolen her automobile.

Two months before Smith drowned her sons, Beverly Russell, Smith’s stepfather, confessed during the murder trial that they had a consenting sexual encounter.

Smith was allegedly assaulted by him when she was 16 years old, but he maintained that neither she nor her mother ever reported the event.

Smith was partially to fault for the crime, according to Russell, who begged the jury to spare Smith’s life.

On July 22, 1995, Smith was convicted responsible for the deaths of the two boys and was sentenced to life in prison.

On the courthouse steps, her husband remarked, “I’ll never forget what Susan has done, and I’ll never forget Michael and Alex,” as she was spared the death penalty.

He continued, “Of course, me and my family are disappointed that the death penalty was not the ruling.

A prisoner named Smith got into trouble again in 2000 over allegations that he had sex with a Houston Cagle. Following his admission of the inappropriate sexual contact, he was given a three-month jail term in addition to losing his employment.

Later, another jail employee named Alfred Rowe acknowledged having an extramarital affair with Smith. Rowe received a probationary period of five years in 2001.
