In 1977, Fatima Whitbread won the intermediate division of the English Schools’ Athletics Championships, launching her professional career. She also won the women’s championship of the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) by clearing 158 feet 5 inches (48.28 meters), setting a new national intermediate mark.

With a throw of 77.44 meters in the 1986 European Championships qualifying round, Fatima also broke the javelin world record. That surpasses the record set by East German Petra Felke just a year prior by 2 meters.

Her career was later hampered by a chronic shoulder ailment that she allegedly sustained while setting the world record throw in 1986. The 1990 UK Athletics Championships was the last competition in which she competed.
